Age twelve a gardener’s boy living on Church Street, Doveridge, Derbys. with his father Alfred, an agricultural labourer, mother Hannah, brothers John 15 a blacksmith’s apprentice, Clifford 9, Lewis 6 and sister Bertha 10.

1911 Census

Age twenty four,  living at 8 Lenton Avenue, The Park, Nottingham, with his wife Mary, age twenty eight, daughters Doris, three, and Lilian who was six months old. He was working as a butler.

The Radcliffe WWI website and research team have assumed Frederick Smith was employed as Charles Birkin’s butler at Lamcote House, Radcliffe on Trent.  Charles Birkin’s funeral at St Mary’s Church in 1932, reported by the Nottingham Evening Post, includes the following passage:

The coffin, which was draped by a Union Jack and  covered by a large cross of white violets from the widow, was carried into the church by eight of the staff at Lamcote House: F. Smith (butler) …
