Age two  living his with father George, a bricklayer’s labourer, mother Annie Eliza Starbuck, his brothers George 16 and Sidney 7,  sisters Eliza 19, Eleanor 14 and Elsie, 12. The family lived on Hogg Lane, Radcliffe on Trent.

Age 12, at school, living with his brother-in-law, John Tom Vickerstaff, Sam’s sister Jane and cousin Ernest at West End Villas. His widowed mother was also living at West End Villas.
