Age 8 living with father James 39, from Stoke Bardolph and mother Katherine 39, from Nottingham, sisters Nellie 17, a domestic servant, Katherine 16, an ironer-laundry, Henrietta 14, a lace-hand mender and brother Fred 12 who was born in Barkstone, Nottinghamshire. They lived at 25 Denison Street, Radford.

Age 18 employed as a general labourer and living with his brother in law William Lewin and sister Helen (Nellie) Lewin. They lived at 2 Edward Ave, Bobbers Mill, Nottingham.
He was employed at Notts. County Asylum (Saxondale); he is listed in their records as an attendant who served in the Armed Forces.

He died of influenza in a base military hospital in France at Wimille, near the coast north of Boulogne.

His service record has not been found but he was in the army before the outbreak of war. His award of the 1914 Star shows he was fighting in France during the first sixteen weeks of the war and would therefore have been a member of the regular army. His qualifying date for the 1914 Star was 16 August 1914.
Alice Annie Bates received £5 grant on 20 February 1919 and 13 shillings 9d (69p) a week pension from 7 July 1919.
Horace’s widow Alice married Arthur William Smith in 1920 and lived in Radcliffe for the rest of her life. Alice and her second husband had 3 children; the eldest William was killed 23rd November 1941 in action in the Middle East in WW2. He served with the York and Lancaster Regiment and is buried Knightsbridge War Cemetery Acroma, Libya.
